Cyberattacks

Session overview:

Cyberattacks – What to look out for and is your business prepared?

Cyberattacks and cybercrime have increased exponentially both globally and in South Africa. All sectors have come under attack with the government, finance and banking sectors most publicly affected.

Numerous reports and findings have been published regarding the threat, highlighting:
  • “Data breaches are viewed as an even greater risk than climate change, inflation and other financial crisis” – Forbes “The 10 Biggest Risks And Threats For Businesses In 2022”
  • “A total of 230 million cyber threats were detected in South Africa, out of which 219 million, or 95.21%, were e-mail-based attacks.” – INTERPOL’s African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2022

Lack of education and awareness is seen as a key contributing factor to the fragility and susceptibility of the South African market to cybercrime. The World Economic Forum found that 95% of cybersecurity incidents occur due to human error. In stark contrast is the pace at which criminals are improving and becoming increasingly sophisticated at exploiting the lack of preparedness of companies and individuals.

Online scams, digital extortion, business email compromise, ransomware, phishing, spoofing and card-not-present (CNP) fraud are just some of the ways these criminals infiltrate secure systems for financial gain. All targeting areas where data, integration, collaboration and people meet, to find the weakest link to penetrate the entire chain.

In this session, we discuss:
  • What are the biggest issues and threats being reported and what is on the rise?
  • Overview of the different threats, attack mechanisms and how these are deployed.
  • What can be done? How can individuals and companies really safeguard themselves?
